How to Increase Blog Traffic & Boost Rankings

Have you implemented SEO best practices for your website but are not seeing the traffic you had expected for your blog?

You could be doing more to get your blog content to stand out from the crowd. After all, if all of your competitors have healthy and active blogs, what do you need to do to get Google to prioritise your content over the rest?

We have the answers! Here are six techniques to increase your blog traffic and organic rankings.

1. Repurpose Your Content

One of the first avenues of thought people will follow when trying to increase blog traffic is simply to publish more. This isn't a bad thing as long as it's good, quality content! But it might be a better idea to ensure you’re getting the most out of your existing content before throwing it to the back of the pile.

So, how do we do this? Repurposing your existing content into different formats can ensure you get the most eyes on it, and it can be a quick win for your strategy efforts.

Start with some of your better-performing content pieces, which might be articles that get a lot of shares on socials, rank well, or have high engagement. By prioritising these pieces, you know the article subjects are already resonating with your audience, so it’s about expanding that reach.

Once you’ve identified the content you want to repurpose, you must decide what formats it might fit best. This could be videos for YouTube, Social Media stories, LinkedIn posts or Infographics.  Pull out the best pieces of info from the article or summarise the takeaway and use this to inform your repurposed content, then link back to the original content piece.

2. Publish Long Form Content

Another way to increase traffic to your blog is to prioritise long-form content. Remember, it's about quality, not quantity! So, while it might be easier to post lots of bite-sized blogs to keep your numbers ticking up, it is more beneficial to take the time to ensure your articles are as thoughtful and in-depth as possible.

We’re not talking about increasing the word count on your blog posts just for the sake of it; we’re not about fluff. You need to ensure that every word you type has a purpose and reason.

Your blog posts should be informative and exciting. They should provide the answers your readers are looking for and actionable tips and steps they can implement themselves.

Ditch 3-step guides and listicles, and focus on in-depth guides and extended pieces into which you’ve poured your best advice.

3. Promote Your Content via Email

Make the most out of your email list and push your latest content through your newsletters. It’s no different from promoting your latest posts on social media, but it guarantees that you get eyes on the articles you think your audience will find value in.

Putting your latest articles in your newsletter is a great way to present yourself as a thought leader in your industry and build trust and credibility for your brand. Plus, it helps your email strategy, too, as it breaks up emails that can be viewed as too ‘sales-y’, giving something back to your audience without expectation.

4. Create Content Hubs

An excellent way to ensure your blog posts receive the attention they deserve is to create ‘Content Hubs.’ Here, you can curate your subtopics and clusters in one place for your audience to find.

Of course, this only works if you publish lots of content under the same topic umbrella. If this isn’t the case, you could be missing out on keyword opportunities that allow you to bring in more readers. Once you have your overall topic for the hub, curate a list of relevant blog titles and then divide this into sub-topics, giving a brief chunk of content to introduce each. A central content hub ensures that people who have found one blog can easily access other articles that provide more helpful information.

In the meantime, you should also implement an internal linking strategy that connects your articles to relevant pages on the site or other blog posts you think the reader would be interested in. You can easily do this by adding a ‘Related Articles’ section to the bottom of each blog post that links to several similar topics.

5. Use Your Niche to Guest Blog

If your blog is still in the early stages, guest blogging is an excellent way to show off your stuff while getting visitors to your site. It's also helpful to build your brand credibility and establish yourself as someone in the industry who knows what they’re talking about.

To do this, identify relevant sites in your niche that accept guest bloggers and negotiate a topic you want to write for. In the closing of your article, link back to your business’ blog, highlighting to the reader that more relevant information, advice and services can be found there if they want to learn more.

6. Optimise Old Blog Posts

Some of your blogs get traffic when published, but this quickly drops off. Of course, with SEO, you can expect the traffic to increase over time gradually, but what if this isn’t the case?

If you have blog topics that are just not performing as well as you thought they should, it might be time to optimise them. This is an important part of any well-rounded content strategy.

Some of the first blogs you posted were not informed by all the excellent knowledge of SEO best practices that you have now. If that’s the issue, then go back and edit your blog to include everything you’ve learned. For example, you might need to increase the length and add more headings, subheadings, or links.

You may also need to optimise metadata or even add schema markup to help Google find and understand your blog. Optimising existing content is a quick and easy win that also allows you to ensure your content is updated with the latest industry news and trends.
