Get Your Website Found with The Right Meta Data

What is Meta Data?

When visualising the SERPs, I want you to imagine a vast library full of thousands of books. Your website is just one book in that library, so, how do you stand out?

Without proper metadata, your book essentially has no front cover, title, blurb, or chapter contents. Google won’t know what your ‘book’, or in this case, website, is about, making it harder for users to find.

Breaking Down Meta Data

There are three key elements to metadata: the title tag, the meta description, and header tags. All three should include key details about your web page that help communicate with search engines, providing them with essential information about your website’s content.

1. Title Tags

First of all, we’ve got title tags. A title tag is just like the title of a book. It should be concise, relevant, and clearly indicate what the contents are. You can do this by including your primary keywords. Google will then use this title tag to understand the main topic of your page.

2. Meta Descriptions

Next, we’ve got meta descriptions. A meta description acts as a brief summary of a webpage and is found beneath the title tag in the SERP. This is your chance to really sell your web page and encourage users to click through to your website by providing a clear and compelling summary of what your page offers. In this step, it’s important to keep the content engaging, and full of relevant keywords.

3. Header Tags

Lastly, we’ve got header tags. Like chapter titles, header tags should be used to organise your content. Use a H1 for the main heading, followed by H2, then H3, and so on. This structure not only enhances readability, but also helps search engines understand the hierarchy of information on your webpage.

Meta data in practice

When you optimise your metadata according to Google's best practices, you increase the likelihood of your website appearing in relevant search results and reaching your target user. It's like giving your book a bold cover and exciting blurb. This will give it a better chance of being discovered in the digital library that is Google.

Take a look at what happened when we optimised the metadata on one of our client's websites:
