I’m not going to lie to you. You can do your own SEO.
You just need the following skills…
Website CMS – the ability to log into your website and make changes to things like Title tags, H1’s, Alt tags, Image sizes, Website URL’s etc
Analysis – you need to be able to look at who currently is at the top of Google, analyse what they are doing, why Google are rewarding them and how you can do it better
Content writing – you need to be able to write compelling, unique content for all of the category and subcategory pages on your site. Ideally 150-350 words per page on every page to be best practice although the analysis you did above may show that you require more.
Creative content writing – you will need to be able to write creative content for your blog around topics related to your sector which are good enough that other bloggers / journalists will want to share and promote and link back to your site
Outreach – you need to be able to research the bloggers and journalists in your sector and then contact them all individually requesting them to share your content. They only get around 30 of these requests per day so as long as you can be a bit different you should be fine.
Web development – You may need to create new landing pages, specifically for locations or for specific niche services on a national basis. You may also need to be able to do the technical aspects such as 301 redirects, improvements in page speed, installation of SSL certificate etc
Graphic Design – A popular form of content for your blog, and something that gets alot of traction when promoting, is an infographic. So you write some content such as “Everything you need to know about SEO” and then turn that into an infographic which can then go onto your social media, your blog and be promoted to other outlets specific for your industry.
Time – Ideally you will spend anywhere between 10 – 60 hours per month working on the SEO. The more competitive the sector, the more time you need.
If you can do all of the above….you’re half way there
Easy peasy.
So what are your options?
You can learn it all and do it all yourself, which shouldn’t take too long. I have only been in the industry for 16 years and I am still learning now.
You can employ someone in house (he just needs all of the above expertise)
You can employ a team of people – may be a bit costly though.
