Pareto’s Law, also known as the 80/20 rule is the principle that 80% of the effects will always come from 20% of the causes.
Make every page relevant for what the page is actually relevant for!
Google is not too complicated, it just wants to give the customer the most relevant result for what the customer is looking for.
This means, for example, if you sell cleaning products and you want your page to be found for cleaning products then you need to ask yourself the question how would Google know you want the page to be found for that term?
How are you showing Google (or the customer!) that the page is relevant for that term?
Do you show it in your content?
Do you show it in your URL, or title tag, or Heading tags etc?
If you are showing Google that you are relevant, are you showing them that you are more relevant than your competitors?
Look at who Google is ranking at the top for the terms you want to be found for and see what they are doing. This will give you a good indicator of what Google is rewarding and you can then look at doing the same but doing it better than them.
If this sounds simple then you are right it is.
Who would’ve thought that the best way to be found on Google is to tell Google (and the customer!) what the page is actually about?
So 80% of your revenue will come from 20% of your customers. The other side of this though is that 80% of your problems will also come from 20% of your customers.
If we know though that 80% of our results will come from 20% of our actions then it does mean we can focus on the 20% to give us some quick wins.
If 20% of the work gets you 80% of the results then utilise the following quick wins in SEO.
1. Keyword Research:
For every page of your website, ask yourself what would you want people to type in to find that page. Come up with a primary search term and a secondary search term.
2. Page Titles:
Put your primary search term and secondary search term into your page title in the correct order – no more than 65 characters.
Ideally format it as – Primary search term | Secondary search term | Company name
3. Content:
Have content on every page – if you are e-commerce don’t just have your products on your category page have 150-200 words of content explaining what the page is about.
Just 3 simple factors that don’t take too much time but will get you quick wins and some quick results.
