Marketing News: Top Stories January 2020

Feb 07, 2020

January was a great start to 2020 as far as marketing news was concerned. In this post, we look over the highlights from the past month including Snapchat making a deal to show coverage of Tokyo Olympics, the revival of Vine and Google’s changes to the way it displays results.

NBC Partners With Snapchat For Tokyo 2020

Ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, NBC has partnered with Snapchat in a bid to engage a younger demographic. The broadcaster will work with Snapchat to provide four Snapchat exclusive shows each day throughout the Olympics. The four daily shows will include two “near real-time” highlight shows.

The broadcaster will also be partnering with Twitter throughout the event offering daily coverage of the Olympics in a 20-minute studio show – a deal reached back in July of last year.

Byte Finally Launches

Tik Tok is all the rage but those looking for their dose of Vine nostalgia may be more tempted by Byte which launched in January. The Vine successor is a 6-second video platform – a familiar creative outlet for former Vine users. And whilst the platform doesn’t have all the bells and whistles rival platforms do the app seems to be banking on its creator partner programme which is yet to launch. Though not live yet, once released the partner programme will give creators a way to monetise their content directly within the app.

LinkedIn Pages Get Some TLC

The Breakout team are all about LinkedIn right now. In fact, Breakout Media Director Mike Lewis is giving a presentation about his LinkedIn success next month. The platform is in a very interesting place and is continually evolving. January didn’t see any slowing down for the platform as it continued to change, with several new features being launched on the social media platform.

The new invite to follow feature allows users to invite first degree connections to follow their pages. LinkedIn pages present a great place to share business content without mixing it in with the more personal posts that go on someone’s personal profile. A second new LinkedIn feature saw live streams brought to pages too. Finally, a third update from LinkedIn also saw that they are pushing the use of pages with the introduction of an easier way to switch between posting to your profile and posting as a page. These new features could see increased use of LinkedIn pages and its certainly something we’ll be exploring.

Google Updates Design For Desktop Search Results

Google rolled out some changes to search result displays on desktop which affected both organic and paid listings. For both organic and paid results the URL has been moved above the page title and is now black. Google also introduced favicons for organic results whilst paid ads saw changes to the “Ad” label which is now black.
